Whole Home Standby Generator Installation

Installing a Whole Home Standby Generator is a smart investment for homeowners looking to ensure a continuous power supply during power outages. This guide provides you with a step-by-step process to install your generator safely and efficiently.

Understanding Sizing and Load Management

We offer air cooled and liquid cooled generators ranging from 13kW all the way up to large industrial units. We want to help you choose the right generator for your property. We will perform a load analysis to help determine your total potential load. we don’t have to assume that you would be using all of your loads at the same time, but we need to account for the reasonable use of your air conditioners, laundry and cooking equipment etc. Once we have discussed your usage, we can size a liquid cooled generator based on the total load. We can’t manage loads for a liquid cooled generator, we just size accordingly.  For some homeowners, size and budget restrictions might lean us towards an air cooled generator. In this case, we want you to understand the concept of load management. Load management allows us to control and prioritize which appliances and systems receive power during an outage. This ensures that your most critical devices, like refrigerators and heating and cooling systems, remain operational while conserving generator capacity.

Manufacturers offer different types of load management. Generac gives us options included in their Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) with optional Smart Management Modules installed on larger devices. Kohler uses a completely different method which often requires a considerable amount more work.  Briggs uses a system that communicates between the ATS and modules connected to your breaker panel or in your attic. We can utilize the best technique based on your particular needs.

We will help you every step of the way. Trust us to install your standby generator system.

Here is how it works:

We will help you select a location for your generator that meets the manufacturer's guidelines. The area should be:

  • At least 5 feet away from windows and doors
  • On a flat, stable surface
  • Well-ventilated to prevent overheating
  • Protected from flooding
  • Comply with local ordinances (we know them all!)

Once we've applied for any needed permits, we will prepare a solid foundation for your generator. A concrete pad or metal stand is ideal. We'll ensure the pad is level and meets the dimensions specified in the owner’s manual. This will provide stability and protect the generator from rising water in flood prone areas.

We will position the generator on the pad, ensuring it is level. We'll secure it according to the manufacturer’s guidelines and connect the generator to your house.

Important: We are licensed electricians. We will coordinate with your grid provider.

    1. Transfer Switch Installation: We will Install the transfer switch near your main electrical panel and/or meter..
    2. Connect the Generator: We'll run electrical conduit from the generator to the transfer switch. We will ensure that all connections are tight and secure, and use the appropriate gauge wire for your generator’s output.
    3. Load Management Wiring: We will connect your load management system to the circuits needed according to your load analysis.
    4. Monitoring device: We will set up a monitoring system that will allow us to help keep track of your system for ongoing maintenance and peac of mind.

Your generator will need to be connected either to natural gas or propane. We have licensed plumbers who will handle all the steps to connect the generator, test for leaks and upgrade your gas meter if needed.

Once all connections are made, it’s time to test the system:

  1. We'll turn on the generator and allow it to run.
  2. We will test the entire system by simulating a power outage and show you how everything works.
  3. We'll Make any necessary adjustments to the load management settings for optimal performance.

To ensure longevity and reliability, we will schedule regular maintenance for your generator. This includes checking the oil, fuel, and air filters, as well as running the generator periodically to ensure it functions correctly.
